The 25th edition of the European school HERCULES

A high level course in experimental research on large systems

For its 25th edition, from March 1st to April 1st, 2015, the European school HERCULES (Higher European Research Course for Users of Large Experimental Systems) welcomes 80 young researchers from all over the world for a high level course in experimental research on large systems. Founded in 1991, the school HERCULES has emerged for the past 25 years as the reference school at international level regarding courses for users of large synchrotron and neutron radiation facilities.

Participants from the European school HERCULES will be initiated during four weeks in Grenoble in the use of neutrons and synchrotron radiation, with hands-on work at the ESRF (European synchrotron radiation facily) and the ILL (Institute Laue Langevin). More than 2,000 international researchers have been trained by world-renowned experts over the last 25 years in Grenoble.

Co-organised by University Joseph Fourier and Grenoble Institute of Technology, in partnership with the large systems, ESRF, ILL, SOLEIL, the Laboratoire Léon Brillouin, the CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research) and the CEA, HERCULES meets a strong European and global demand in high level courses for young researchers able to use the most advanced technologies applying neutron sources and synchrotron radiation.

Indeed, the large systems using these radiations hold a dominant and multidisciplinary place in the scientific research landscape, which is steadily growing with the construction of new facilities.

HERCULES, an exceptionally attractive tool for Grenoble, has encouraged young talents (more than a hundred in 20 years) to take up their place in the large systems and scientific institutions of Grenoble.
