Research Strategies

Grenoble is ranked as the 5th most Inventive city in the world by Forbes and amongst the top three in Europe by the European iCapital contest. It has an exceptionally high number of patents per inhabitant (6,23 ‱) and the most intense research ecosystem in France.

The city hosts 5 large international research facilities (ESRF, ILL, EMBL, IRAM, GHMFL), that attract thousands of researchers every year.

Grenoble-Alpes is the second most successful site after Paris in the national programme "Investissements d’Avenir", with 77 selected projects, representing a total of over 1 B€ in direct funding

Defined areas of specialization

University Grenoble Alpes is a major contributor at a worldwide level in several strong key fields, with over 10% of French scientific publications, among which are: particle physics, condensed matter physics, crystallography, electrochemistry, geosciences, ecology and computer science.

Competitive funding

As a whole, the different research units currently receive 57 M€ of European funding per year, 150 M€ of national public funding and 160 M€ of private funding through competitive tenders and private partnerships.

This success will increased, in particular for less competitive sectors, which will benefit from the sharing of good practices and support services.

4 major challenges

UGA fosters 4 socio-economic challenges, which will guide its actions and provide strong focal points for our project. They build on our strengths, our success at previous PIA projects (in particular Labex, Idefi, IRT and Equipex), our key European research projects and are in full coherence with our strategic plans since 2008, as well as European, national, regional and metropolitan priorities:
